Earlier this month, several online publications revealed that Sprouts, which operates more than 460 stores in 24 states, was selling THC Beverages. I have written about the growing number of mainstream retailers embracing this market. Supermarket news shared the details well in on January 9th, saying that the specialty grocer would be selling THC drinks in 115 stores in Florida and Texas. I live right near a store in Texas and went online to see what they offer, andthe store near me wasn't showing its products online to me when I was trying to find them.

There is a big issue that Sprouts needs to consider: The federal government has made hemp-derived THC beverages illegal beginning in November. While there have been some members of Congress that have supported bills to extend this, the federal government remains on track to shut down the industry. Of course, many states are blocking hemp-derived cannabinoids. Sprouts does not face any liability for the sale of these products, but it could face a challenge in the future. The stock, currently at $70.55, is down more than 11% this year and fell sharply in 2025 after plunging from mid-year.

We can all hope that the federal government will change this pending ban, but hope is not really a good strategy for business planning. Some of the brands mentioned in the Supermarket News piece are part of the directory we keep at New Cannabis Ventures, which means that they are doing it the right way. Some good companies are missing too.
